The Substance

Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong? Deliriously entertaining and ruthlessly satirical, Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes sensation turns toxic beauty culture inside out with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for fable for the ages. Explosive, provocative and twisted, THE SUBSTANCE marks the arrival of a thrillingly visionary filmmaker.

Silents Synced: Nosferatu with Radiohead's Kid A/Amnesiac

Kick off spooky season with this unique cinematic event that couples F.W. Murnau’s century old masterpiece Nosferatu with genre-undefinable alt rock band Radiohead’s mind-blowing “Kid A” (2000) and “Amnesiac” (2001) albums. Featuring some of the most iconic images in cinema history, Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror has continued to haunt and terrify modern audiences with its gothic imagery and blood curdling suspense. In this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a simple real-estate transaction leads an intrepid businessman deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania. There he encounters the otherworldly Count Orlok (Max Schreck) who soon after embarks upon a cross-continental voyage to take up residence in a distant new land… and establish his ambiguous dominion. The addition of Radiohead's unintentionally perfect soundtrack creates a brand new way to experience both the film and the albums. Don't miss it!

Suspiria

Considered a pinnacle of the giallo subgenre, Dario Argento’s masterwork ranks as one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and with darn good reason. Skillfully employing dream logic (the script was co-written by then wife Daria Nicolodi) and gloriously garish lighting techniques, the film is a true modern fairy tale that tells the story of a ballet student (Jessica Harper) who transfers to a German dance academy only to find it is run by a coven of murderous witches. Argento’s command of shock and suspense is on full display in every blood-soaked scene, but the true secret weapon of this film is the unbelievably scary and propulsive score by the prog rock band Goblin. It all adds up to that rare witches brew: the perfect horror experience. If you've never seen this beauty on the big screen, now's the time! The October 29th screening will be playing as part of our Witches Night Market. Come to shop and take in a double feature with The Craft!
