Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), is the youngest daughter of a dysfunctional family. After a critical incident leads to her commitment in a mental hospital, she confidently reenters normal life. She finds a job ad for a “Secretary Wanted” and is hired by the awkward lawyer Mr. Grey (James Spader). Their strictly professional relationship quickly evolves into a powerful dynamic of intimacy, discipline, vulnerability, and control.
